John Trevethan - "Kali Yuga " - Element 115

This piece is from my band Element 115, which is Mike Griffith on bass & reeds, Chris Tench on guitars and myself on keyboards and Logic. Everything was done in Logic with most editing carried out in the score editor. The premise of E115 is to let the music guide the musicians, instead of the other way around. For example, Griff improvised many bass lines in several takes. Then I cut sections out and through group decision, created a finished bass part. This process was used with the guitar parts as well. Percussion was from a Simmons SDX as well as SampleCell cards. Logic was used as the front end for a ProTools III TDM system. Part of the creative process was governed by the Brian Eno "Oblique Strategies" cards. When at a creative impasse a card is drawn and whatever instruction is on the card must be carried out in complete seriousness. (i.e. "Use filters")
